Learning Commons Student Guide

The Learning Commons, located on the second and third floors of Hawthorne Library, brings together the library, the Tutoring Center, the Writing Center, the Testing Center, and the Tech Desk, and all services are free to currently enrolled students unless otherwise noted, with the second floor designated for collaborative work and the third floor designated as a silent study floor. The Learning Commons is open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and is closed Sundays, though hours are reduced during breaks and extended to midnight Monday through Thursday during finals week.

Drop-in tutoring for math and science is available in Room 214, while tutoring in all other subjects requires a 50-minute appointment booked through the Navigate app, with a limit of two appointments per week per course; appointments must be cancelled at least two hours in advance to avoid being recorded as a no-show, and students with three no-shows in a term will lose online booking privileges for the remainder of that term. Online tutoring through Zoom is offered Sunday through Thursday from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Writing Center consultants assist with any stage of the writing process in 30- or 60-minute sessions but do not proofread or edit papers, and students may alternatively submit drafts of up to 10 pages online for written feedback, which is returned within two business days. The Testing Center administers makeup and placement exams; for makeup exams, the instructor must submit a test request at least 24 hours in advance, students must present a photo ID, and phones, smartwatches, and bags must be stored in lockers, with the last test starting 90 minutes before closing. Testing accommodations require a letter from Accessibility Services and must be booked at least three business days in advance.

Twelve group study rooms (two to six people) may be reserved up to seven days in advance through the library website, limited to two hours per student per day, and reservations are held for 15 minutes after the start time, while two individual study rooms on the third floor are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The Tech Desk lends laptops, Wi-Fi hotspots, graphing calculators, and headphones; laptops may be borrowed for four hours for use in the building or for a full term through an application that takes up to five business days to process. Late returns are charged $5 per hour up to a maximum of $50, and lost or damaged equipment will be billed to the student account. Questions may be directed to learningcommons@harrowvalley.example, (555) 555-0142, or the library website chat during open hours.
